Hello again friends, Press Tent Dave here with the 2nd installment of "Keeping it REAL with Press Tent Dave". This weeks guest is WGR #3 and frequent visitor on tour in the "No Spoiler Thread" Chris Bird.
Welcome Chris and congratulations on your win at the St Jude Classic a few weeks ago.
Thanks Dave was finally good to get that break through win, hopefully more will come the rest of the season although theres alot of great players out there to contend with.
Lets get started then shall we?
Ready when you are Dave.
Tell us about your family.
Have been married to my wife Ashley for just over 12 years now.
The Mrs and I ziplining in St Kitts
Where abouts do you live or were raised?
Grew up in Enfield which is in north London, England and now live in Vermont USA. Heres a picture of where I grew up. Of course the only photo I could find has my old bedroom blocked by the telephone pole, a massive 6 foot square room. About enough room for the bed and a bureau with a tv and computer. Look at the size of that front garden too, the back was just a bit bigger. Looks like the new owners need to mow the lawn Alot different to where I am now in the middle of nowhere and an acre of land to mow, keeps me fit I guess.
Do you have any pets?
Just the one cat now, Buster. Usually acts as my caddy or just sucking up for some treats.
What song was your first dance to on your wedding day?
"When you say nothing at all" by Ronan Keating. It's a classic, honest
What is the meaning behind your username?
Pretty simple. chrashbird is a mix of mine and my wifes name chr from Chris and ash from Ashley. Had an email account using that so it was easy to remember on the playstation. I think the media stole the idea when they came up with Brangelina a couple of years later.....where's my royalties?
What bought you to RGT?
Playing with no aids. Was getting bored with the bigger league sites where you have to score -15 just to keep up. Used to play Tiger Woods games many years ago, but I'd get bored after 6 months after maxing my chracter out and birdieing every hole. RGT has kept me interested in still playing TGC after 10 months of playing virtually every day.
What is your favourite thing about RGT?
The community. Being able to have a laugh and not constantly have people bitching, complaining or claiming everyone else is cheating is they post good scores. Last time I looked its a video game and not life or death.
Who is your biggest rival in RGT?
I have two. Brad (Bluorfe), as he always kicks my back side in the other small tours we play in. If you manage to beat him, theres a good chance you'll be in contention for the win and the other is Andi (Smiffylfc79) as we are about the same skill level so its good to have a rival to compete against when you know you have no chance of winning or getting a top 10 in a given week. Rumour has it the 79 in his name stands for the score he tries to beat every week
What is your first and best memories of golf?
Earliest memories of golf are going for walks as a kid in the evenings in the summer to Whitewebbs Park with our dog Stella and we'd throw a golf ball for her to fetch. We'd then pretend to throw the ball into the woods that surrounded the 1st fairway and she'd go running off into the rough and come back with someones lost ball. Pretty much end up with a duffle bag full of balls by the end of summer. As for the real game I can remember the 85 Ryder Cup and watching Pro celebrity golf on the BBC.
Best memories are playing pitch and putt with friends over 20 years ago on the various Par 3 courses we had in the area and it only cost about £1.60 or $2
Whos the Blond Bombshell with Stella?
Who is your favourite golfer of all time and current player?
When I was growing up it was Greg Norman, probably because of the blond hair. These days don't really have a true favourite, except for Europe in the Ryder Cup.
Whats the best shot you've ever seen?
Probably for short shot Tiger at the 2005 Masters 16th and for long shot Padraig Harrington at the 17th hole of the 2008 Open.
As for my own shots, well I suck although I did make a 25ish footer for birdie once at my local course
What is your real life handicap?
Never bothered getting a handicap, usually try to score under 100 Never shot under 90, closest I came was being at 85 on the final hole of my local course (Crown Point Country Club) which is a 180+ par 3 slightly down hill and hit a massive slice into the pond that is more than 20 yards short right of the green . Ended up making a 7 lol.
What set of clubs are in your bag?
Taylor Made irons, 3W and 5W. Callaway Razr Fit Driver ,Cleveland 60° wedge and some extremely cheap putter that my parents bought me from Argos as a kid for about £8 (Ive tried other putters, but they just don't feel right).
What is your favourite course to watch and/or play in real life?
On TV, probably Augusta or St Andrews. In real life around where I live are Lake Morey or Owls Nest.
What is your favourite course played in The Golf Club?
Toss up between Magnolia or Whistling Straits Sheboygan.
What would you do to improve The Golf Club and/or RGT?
For The Golf Club, global wind thats the same for everyone in tournaments and for RGT trying to get more players to join and stick with it.
What are your other favourite sports?
Football, American Football, Cricket.
Which teams do you support?
In football, no top teams. As a kid a followed my local non league team Enfield (would have been division 5 and then 6 in the English Pyramid system), stopped watching them around 1994 and played on Saturday afternoons (Mayfield Athletic) instead in the Southern Olympian League with a load of overweight guys who were in their late 30's.
American Football, Buffalo Bills. Started supporting them when I was 8 or 9 when it came on Channel 4 in England back in the early 80's. Thought they had a good name, didn't realise they sucked until they had that great superbowl run....and now they suck again....how great it is to be a Bills fan living in New England
Cricket, Middlesex although I can't say I've seen much cricket in the last 12 years except for streaming some Ashes matches against Australia.
Whats your best sporting memory?
Enfield winning the FA Trophy twice in the 80's. Winning a Sunday League Cup Final for Sellars FC in the East Herts Combination League in 2002 and scoring some cracking goals when I was allowed to play up front for Mayfield (I was young so always got stuck in center midfield as I could run). Most memorable ones are hitting a volley from just outside the box after a cross from the left wing that nearly took the net off, going on a mazy run around 5 or so players starting from the center circle and lumping it in with my weaker left foot (Maradona and Ricky Villa have nothing on me lol). Last one was actually scored 2 identical goals in the same match from outside the box, the opposition keeper was only about 5 feet 5 inches and kept standing way off his line so as soon as I was about 25 yards out I'd lob him
Whats your worst sporting memory?
Buffalo Bills losing 4 consecutive Superbowls and England losing in penalty shootouts to West Germany, Germany, Argentina, Portugal, Portugal and Italy.....Did I miss any? lol Pretty sure this is the team England put out when they get to a tournament:
What was the 1st computer/console you had?
Spectrum 48K, gotta love those graphics from the early 80's. Loved Manic Miner and Daly Thompsons Decathlon......until the damn rubber keys stayed stuck down
What was your first and best golf video game you ever played?
First was Leaderboard on the Commodore 64. Best when I was growing up was PGA Tour Golf on the Amiga. Thought it was great with the green grid, live updates and leaderboard.
Whats the 1st car you ever owned?
A sky blue coloured Fiat Panda
What was the first music album you ever bought ,favourite as well?
Definitely Maybe by Oasis, favourite is The Bends by Radiohead
What channels are preset on your car stereo?
Got Sirius XM satellite radio, so:
1. Sirius/XM Soccer Channle 94
2. Mad Dog sports radio
3. Classic Rewind (cassette era rock)
4. Classic Vinyl
5. First Wave (pretty much British 80's alternative music)
6. 60's on 6
7. 70's on 7
8. 80's on 8
9. 90's on 9
10. The Pulse (music from the 2000's and today)
Whats your favourite colour?
Blue
Whats your favourite film?
Hard to pick a favourite, so any of Star Wars, The Great Escape, Forrest Gump or The Shawshank Redemption.
Whats your favourite TV show?
Don't watch too much regular tv other than sports, but I like to laugh so I'd say the Big Bang Theory. Growing up would have been Fawlty Towers, The young Ones and Bottom.
Whats your favourite food?
Sunday roast cooked by my mum, sucks living 5 time zones away
Whats your favourite drink?
Tea or a shandy.
Whats your favourite holiday/vacation destination?
Probably visiting friends and family back in England. Have done quite a few cruises, best one was a Mediterranean 2 week cruise and I enjoyed stopping in Croatia on that one:
Water looks a bit more blue than Southend on Sea
The Mrs insisted on this picture from a Baltic cruise stop in I think it was Helsinki. Hopefully Mr Karlsson can give us the proper translation
Last of all, any other interesting information about yourself you'd like to share?
Not a whole lot thats fascinating Dave ,biggest claim to fame is playing under 7's football against David Beckham and Michael Duberry in under 7-10's matches.
Well thanks alot for your time Chris. See you soon in the Press Tent.
No problem Dave, keep up the great work.
Thats it for this edition folks, hope to see you all again soon as I profile another player. Until then Keep it REAL!!!!
